Letter of intent for your STUDY PERMIT

April 3, 2023 Posted by FJW2021 English

If you are a student planning to study abroad, it is important to prepare all the necessary documents to ensure a smooth application process. One of the documents you may need to provide is a letter of intent, also known as a motivation letter or statement of purpose. In this blog, we will discuss what a letter of intent is, why it is important, and how to write a compelling letter to include in your study permit application.

What is a Letter of Intent?

A letter of intent is a document that explains your reasons for pursuing a specific program of study at a particular institution. It is an opportunity to showcase your academic achievements, professional goals, and personal motivations for studying abroad. This is a key component of your Canadian study permit application. Although not a legal requirement, the Canadian government recommends including such a document to help immigration officers understand why you want to study in Canada and decide whether or not to approve your student permit application.

Why is a Letter of Intent Important?

A letter of intent is important because it provides immigration authorities with valuable information about you and your motivations for studying abroad. It helps to demonstrate that you have a clear plan and purpose for your studies and that you are committed to achieving your goals. It also allows you to highlight your academic achievements and personal qualities that make you a suitable candidate for the program.

Below, we share the key parts that your letter should include:

A) Introduction

Start with a clear introduction: Begin your letter with a clear introduction stating your name, the program you are applying to, and the institution you plan to attend.

B) Explain your Motivations

Why do you want to study in Canada? You should present a compelling argument for why you want to study in Canada rather than a university or college in your home country or a different country. Canada is an attractive study destination for many reasons, including its high-quality education, lower tuition fees compared to countries like the US or the UK, diverse classrooms, multiculturalism, and more. In a few sentences, explain why studying in Canada is the best option for you.

Tip: Since you are applying for a temporary residence permit as a student, immigration officers want to ensure that you will return to your country once your permit expires, avoid discussing applying for permanent residency in your letter.

C) Why did you apply to a specific university or college?

Next, explain your motivations for pursuing this particular program of study. You may want to talk about how this program fits into your academic and professional goals and how it will help you achieve your long-term aspirations. In this paragraph, mention some aspects that influenced your decision to apply to a specific Designated Learning Institution (DLI). For example, the school you choose may have a high ranking, good reviews, or be known for its research facilities or successful alumni. Avoid generic statements like “This university will help me achieve my professional goals” and instead talk about the school’s unique strengths.

D) What program of study are you interested in and why?

The immigration officer wants to understand your motivation for choosing a particular program of study. It is important to preferably choose a program that is related to your previous education and/or work experience, as immigration officials look for your study to make sense with your education and experience. You can also talk about your interest in the field and how this next step will equip you with academic or technical skills to advance in your career or business plan when you return to your home country. If you chose a program that does not align with your previous education, explain why you are making this change and how this program will help you fill the gaps in your skills. You can also highlight your academic achievements, including any relevant coursework, research, or extracurricular activities. This will help demonstrate that you are a capable and motivated student who is well-prepared for the rigours of the program.

E) End with a strong conclusion

Finally, you should end your letter with a strong conclusion that summarizes your key points and reiterates your commitment to the program. This is also a good opportunity to thank immigration authorities for their consideration.

Conclusion

A letter of intent is an important part of your study permit application. It provides you with the opportunity to showcase your academic achievements, personal qualities, and motivations for studying abroad. It is ideal to keep it to no more than 1 page as immigration officials are busy. By following the tips described in this blog, you can write a compelling letter that will increase your chances of being accepted into your chosen program.

Good luck!
